The End of Summer

Sitting quietly in the shade, watching a blue wren bustling about her nest
The rush of bird wings in flight
The hum of bees
Zebra finches squeaking
The dog shaking himself after a snooze
The distant sound of a lawn mower
Birds twittering
The tin roof creaking as it warms and cools
The buzz of dragonflies
A breath of wind
The occasional rustling of leaves
A pesky fly
The quiet sounds of the earth being slowly baked in the sun

A quiet house

The children have all gone to cricket with daddy, and here I am in the house by myself! (Trying not to put too many exclamation marks...!) I don't want to waste the quiet by doing house-work - I think I'll read instead. Although I could cook dinner....? Nah.

Last week chicken no.1 read the Narnia Chronicles, and in her long and detailed discussions about it afterwards (I'm trying to be polite here) I discovered I had forgotten a lot of the details. So I'm plunging back into it again. I love good children's books!

Now to find where she put the book... She keeps disappearing with it to re-read her favourite bits...

Of grandma's and little chickens

It's not everyone who has a Nanna who can make a sculpture of your children...

Yep, here's that same little chicken. Same cheeky smile. Boy, I wish I could still fit on those slides!

I love icypoles

A hot and sticky day today. Just perfect for icypoles and a picnic by the lake.

Photos of the day

After such a long holiday it seems to take a week or two to get back into the swing of things (there's my optimism shining through). So while I'm rolling my eyes at children taking ages to do a few simple jobs, I might as well take some photos, eh?

This one looks like a little dragonfly. It's very very teeny. Not even the size of my little finger nail.

An alien has been doodling on our zucchini... or perhaps just ladybird larvae... Can't be sure, either way..

And one of the many uses of a glass jar. We're studying plants this term. It's lovely to have the garden to study real plants rather than diagrams!
